The
projects listed below and others like them will be funded in
part by profits made through Karma Kenya. As a Karma Kenya traveler,
you are invited to stop by and see them for yourself. If, however,
you would like to spend more quality time in the villages and
genuinely volunteer your time and talents, you can do so by
applying to Village Volunteers (www.villagevolunteers.org),
a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Seattle, Washington.
You may also make a direct tax-deductible donation to Namunyak
Maasai Welfare and/or its projects through Village Volunteers.
Construction Projects
Problem: Rivers, stagnant
puddles, roadside streams... are sources of water which are
not only sometimes up to 40km away from the nearest village,
but also extraordinarily unsanitary and dangerous for consumption.
However, they are often the only options families have for
survival.
Solution: Collection tanks
can harvest rainwater, and/or water pumps can bring up clean
water. A water tank collector for one family costs an estimated
30- to 50,000 Kenyan Shillings.
Problem: Lack of proper
human waste disposal systems force people to go out in the
open or near where runoff can contaminate water sources, such
as rivers.
Solution: Pit latrines
can be constructed for numerous families and communities,
which significantly decreases the risks of unsanitary conditions.
Problem: Animals use and
contaminate water springs.
Solution: Build fences
to protect the water springs, and water troughs for livestock.
Problem: Health clinics
can be up to __ km away for some households, and mortality
rates are distressingly high for birthing mothers and their
babies.
Solution: Sirua Aulo Academy
will host a large, eco-friendly maternity ward and health
clinic, pending funding for building material, supplies, staff
and labor.
Problem: Many students
in Sirua Aulo Academy are orphans without proper homes or
support. Sirua Aulo students and staff still need permanent
places to learn and room to grow, as more and more parents
want their children to attend this school. In addition, Sirua
Aulo Academy strives to become a model, competitive school
with contemporary structures.
Solution Build dormitories
for students and staff, build primary and secondary classrooms,
build science labs and computer labs (the first ever in the
Transmara District! However, computers must be solar-powered
or manually charged, as there is no electricity in this area).
Problem: The latest methods
for surival techniques and enhancing quality of life, such
as bio-intensive farming, dairy cow productivity, HIV/AIDS
prevention, and the hazards of female genital mutilation,
are not being taught effectively or efficiently to those who
need to learn them. Illiterate adults have no place to learn
how to read and children have no place to find books, if they
could afford them anyway.
Solution: Build an adult
education center on the campus of Sirua Aulo Academy, along
with the district's first library!
Income-generating
projects for youth groups and women groups
Problem:
Lack of sustainable, reliable source of income
Solution: (ideas)
- Teach youth groups how to grow and sell mushrooms
- Give dairy cows to widows so that she can use the milk for
her family and sell any excess for an income. Dairy cows are
preferable because they can be fenced and the surrounding
land can be freed up for other purposes, such as more land
for biointensive farming.
- Train community members how to increase their food security
and diversify their crop at the same time as maximizing a
limited amount of space through bio-intensive farming methods.
A bio-intensive farm on the Sirua Aulo Academy campus will
not only become a place to train families, but also a food
source for students and staff.
- Train micro-crediting and business strategies for youth
groups and women groups who want to sell, for example, Maasai
beadwork
Healthcare
Problem: Lack of understanding
about health issues and cultural sensitivity to them
Solution: (ideas)
-Host educational forums on health issues (sensitization),
such as sanitation, HIV awareness, effects of feminine genital
mutation, genital hygiene topics (targeting students, youth,
and general population)
- Homeopathic healthcare: volunteers such as trained nurses
can hold open sessions where public can come for free treatment
and medication
- Patient-based asssistance: Volunteers can work in the clinic
registry and give inservices, or provide direct care at Sirual
Aulo Academy's clinic (when it's ready)
Orphan Sponsorship
These children are still in need of sponsorship. It is $365
USD for one full year, which pays for the child's tuition,
meals, uniform, school supplies, and, when the dormitories
are complete (pending adequate funding), lodging. They are
currently students at Sirua Aulo Academy, being taught and
cared for in spite of their lack of sponsors.
